Astro Planner — Night Sky Photo.

Last updated: April 16, 2026

Overview

Astro Planner is an astrophotography planning app. Most features run on your device using astronomical math; one feature (Aurora Tracker) calls out to NOAA's public Space Weather API to fetch real-time geomagnetic data. We don't run our own backend.

Data Collection

Astro Planner does not collect any personal data. Specifically:

  • No accounts or sign-ups — the app works without registration.
  • No analytics or tracking — no SDKs for usage tracking, crash reporting, advertising IDs, or user identification.
  • No advertising — there are no ads and no ad-related data collection.
  • No backend we operate — we do not run any server that receives or stores your data.

Location

If you grant location permission, Astro Planner reads your coordinates to compute sun and moon positions, golden hour, Milky Way visibility, and to center the light pollution map on you. These calculations all run on-device; your coordinates never leave your phone for the astronomical math.

To display the name of your city in the app, your coordinates may be sent once to your platform's standard reverse-geocoding service: Apple Maps on iOS, Google Play Services on Android. This is the same call any maps or weather app makes; we don't receive or store the result.

Network Calls

The app makes the following outbound requests:

  • NOAA SWPC (services.swpc.noaa.gov) — fetched by the Aurora Tracker to display current and forecast Kp index. The request includes only your device's IP (standard for any HTTP call) and contains no personal identifiers. NOAA is a US government agency.
  • djlorenz.github.io — light pollution map tiles. Tiles are static images served from GitHub Pages; no personal data is sent.
  • Apple Maps / Google Play Services — only when reverse-geocoding your coordinates to a city name (see Location above).

All other features (sun, moon, golden hour, moon calendar, Milky Way) work without a network connection.

Settings Storage

Your preferences (selected location, theme, units) are stored locally on your device using your platform's standard preferences storage. They never leave your device.

Children's Privacy

Astro Planner does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children under 13.
